$UTIL Distribution Guide

Version 1.0

🧭 Purpose

This guide provides clear, consistent standards for framing contribution requests and estimating UTIL rewards within the Matou DAO ecosystem. As a part of the Contribution system, it supports both Governance Stewards (responsible for proposal coordination) and Project Stewards (responsible for implementation) in:

  • Estimating the time required for contributions.
  • Assigning an appropriate reward based on the skill level and task type.
  • Ensuring fair and peer-verifiable compensation using the Matou Utility Token ($UTIL).

πŸ”‘ Principles

  • ⏱ Time-Based: Rewards are based on estimated hours required.
  • πŸŽ“ Skill-Aligned: Rates reflect domain-specific expertise and responsibility.
  • πŸ” Transparent: All contribution requests must clearly define scope, time, and required skills.
  • βœ… Peer Verified: Rewards are only released after successful peer verification.

πŸ›  Framing a Contribution Request

A good request should include:

FieldDescription
TitleClear and concise name of the contribution
DescriptionWhat is to be done, why it's needed, and any dependencies
ObjectivesSpecific objectives aligned to proposal goals
DeliverablesMeasurable outputs (e.g. report, prototype, documentation)
Acceptance CriteriaConditions to verify completion and quality
Contribution Typegovernance, technical, cultural, or community
Skill RequirementsSpecific skills required to complete the work
Estimated HoursBased on complexity and scope
Actual HoursBased on complexity and scope
ReviewerSteward or peer responsible for review/sign-off

🎚 Tiered Contributor Multipliers

Tier multipliers reflect contributor experience and community value, in line with the Contribution Schema tier_multiplier field in ContributionRewards.

  • New Contributor: 0.85
  • Established Contributor: 1.00
  • High-Value Contributor: 1.25
  • Legacy Contributor: 1.5
  • Lead Contributor: 2.0

Quality Multiplier (peer review)

Applied after tier multiplier, based on review outcome and quality rating.

  • Meets Criteria: 1.00
  • Exceeds Criteria (minor): 1.05
  • Exceeds Criteria (major): 1.10
  • Revision Required: 0.85 (applies if rework needed due to quality)

Final UTIL reward formula: Final UTIL = Hourly Rate Γ— Estimated Hours Γ— Tier Multiplier Γ— Quality Multiplier

πŸ“Š Examples

  1. Governance Support

    • Task: Draft a governance decision plan
    • Hours: 8
    • Skill: Governance Support
    • Base Rate: 80 UTIL/hr
    • Tier: Established (Γ—1.00)
    • Reward: 80 Γ— 8 Γ— 1.00 = 640 UTIL
  2. Senior Development

    • Task: Create a UTIL distribution smart contract
    • Hours: 20
    • Skill: Senior Development
    • Base Rate: 80 UTIL/hr
    • Tier: High-Value Contributor (Γ—1.50)
    • Reward: 80 Γ— 20 Γ— 1.15 = 1,840 UTIL

πŸ“£ Tips for Stewards

  • Use previous similar tasks as benchmarks.
  • Break larger requests into smaller verifiable pieces.
  • Engage peers early to ensure realistic estimates.
  • Prioritize clarity and accountability β€” ambiguity leads to disputes.

πŸ”„ Peer Review Requirements

Each completed contribution must include:

  • Evidence of output (link, repo, document, etc.)
  • Feedback from at least one peer or stakeholder
  • Confirmation from Steward that acceptance criteria are met

🧩 Future Updates

This guide will evolve with DAO experience. Feedback is welcome and updates will be reviewed by Governance Stewards and the Treasury Council.
