$COM Token Technical Overview
Version 1.0
πΆ Purposeβ
The Matou Community Token ($COM) is a non-transferable governance token used within the Matou DAO ecosystem. It exists to empower communities, particularly TribalDAOs, to guide strategic decisions and shape the evolution of shared infrastructure and protocols.
COM holders participate in Community House governance, helping to direct the DAOβs mission, values, and priorities. By distributing governance rights broadly across participating communities, COM supports collective sovereignty, redistributive coordination, and polycentric governance in alignment with Indigenous values.

COM provides its holders with the right to propose and vote on matters in the Community House, including but not limited to:
| Governance Area | Description |
|---|---|
| πΊοΈ Strategic Direction | Guiding the DAOβs purpose, partnerships, and growth |

πΉ Distributionβ
COM is earned through the use of Matouβs tools and services provided by the DAO. Some examples of this include:
- π Setting up a community account with Matou platform
- π¨ Participating in design and feedback sessions
- ποΈ Engaging Matou community support services
- π€ Participating in working groups or governance processes
The number of community tokens issued is proportionate to each communityβs level of activity and engagement.
For explicit rules on earning via contributions and platform usage, see the COM Distribution Guide.
πΉ Use Casesβ
While COMβs primary function is governance, it also plays a broader role in ecosystem alignment:
| Use Case | Description |
|---|---|
| π³οΈ Community House Voting | Core use β voting on DAO strategy, funding, and structure |
| πΒ Record of activity and impact | COM balances demonstrate community tools usage and who will be impacted most by DAO changes |
πΉ Tokenomics Principlesβ
The COM token is governed by several key design principles:
| Principle | Implementation |
|---|---|
| π§ Governance First | COM holders shape the DAOβs direction, values, and spending |
| π Community Anchored | Token distribution centers Indigenous participation and TribalDAO agency |
| π Redistributive | COM helps return power back to technology users instead of builders |
| βοΈ Non-Speculative | Emphasis on governance and alignment, not price speculation |
| π Moderated Access | Treasury Stewards and proposals gate misuse or centralization risks |
πΉ Comparison to Other Matou Tokensβ
| Token | Role | Voting Power | Tradable | Primary Function |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| COM | Community governance | β Yes | β Yes | Strategic direction + treasury access |
| CTR | Contribution reputation | β (Contributor House) | β No | Contributor recognition + influence |
| UTIL | Utility + access token | β No | β (Treasury only) | Access to tools, services, incentives |
πΉ Treasury and Moderationβ
- Treasury Stewards oversee issuance and burning under DAO-approved frameworks
- Token requests or proposals are subject to community approval, with thresholds and filters
- Malicious or exploitative use can be vetoed or blocked through governance structures (e.g., Elder Council, Stewards)
πΉ Impact and Outcomesβ
COM is how Matou DAO:
- π§βπ€βπ§ Strengthens the role of communities in shaping the ecosystem
- β Prioritises community outcomes above technological and organisational development
- π‘ Aligns funding and strategy with Indigenous values and needs
- π£ Elevates underrepresented voices in Web3 decision-making
- π Connects tribal self-determination with digital sovereignty tools
πΉ Future Considerationsβ
- π€Β Defined COM reward activities and calculations
- π Time-weighted COM decay (e.g., active vs. historic impact)
- π₯ COM multisigs or distributed authority
- πΒ Liquid democracy or delegated authority
- π οΈ Community scoreboards and impact dashboards to visualize DAO activity
